Why professional advice even in small #PowerBI Projects is important…

Since August 2018 I was hired or involved in at least 4 completely different Power BI Projects at different Customers with fairly different Architectures and Data Sources. Some of them I did with @b.telligent which are a Microsoft Gold Partner and therefore qualified as well. And of course there were different requirements in these projects regarding everything. This shows how broad (Architecture) the usage of Power BI can be. But what all of them had in common is, they all started with Business or IT guys which just learned Power BI recently. Most of them with some very good background in Excel (Business) or just relational Databases (IT). Both did a great job, but 3 out of 4 projects still got into trouble sooner or later. There was no Data Strategy, no Data management concepts, no reporting concepts, even in Enterprise BI scenarios. That’s where I stepped in and analysed as usual the different situations. The findings from this short period are:

For example due to the lack of a proper Data model or wrong Data loading strategy. memory and performance issue arrived. Even wrong business calculations happened.
Due to the lack of knowledge of managing Application and Development Lifecycles in mid-size and large Enterprises, versioning issues and even big security issues with Power BI Files arrived.
Further, due to a lack of knowledge of the full Microsoft Azure Data Platform and Business Application Stack, synergy and opportunities were missed.
A report should load between 1 and 5 seconds, I have seen Reports loading 5 Minutes or more…

That’s why it is important to get Senior Advice from long term experienced Consultants in the Business Intelligence, Data Science, Data warehousing or whatever Data ________ Area. Even if you think you are in the self service Area. Power BI is not like Excel, it’s a complete BI Solution in case, from single Desktop usage up to Enterprise BI Scenarios and more. There is a need for a Data Strategy including the Management of Self Service BI.
