The problem with many risk matrices is not the idea. The problem is the template. A fixed 5×5 grid may look familiar, but it does not automatically match the organization’s scoring method, terminology or risk policy. Then the report starts adapting the business to the visual, which is the wrong way round.
The new release makes the matrix much more adaptable. You can build the visual around the risk model instead of forcing the risk model into a rigid chart.

New in 2.0.0.1: Detail Cell / Table turns a matrix cell into a risk review
Update: 6 September 2026. The new cell detail table connects the Classic heatmap overview with the individual risks behind it. Select an occupied cell or its +N marker to open a docked table below the matrix—without adding another visual to the report.
Imagine a review meeting where several risks share a high-impact cell. Instead of stopping at the count, open the table, search for an owner, sort by review date and follow the link to the risk register. The matrix remains the starting point, while the table supplies the context needed for the next action.
One row per risk, with phase values side by side
Impact and Likelihood compare each risk’s bound phases in the order printed above the table, such as Start / Current / Treated. Values like 5 / 4 / 2 show the progression in one row, even when the other phases lie in different cells. Missing phases show a dash. Size is shown once per risk using the first populated phase value, and Risk Band identifies the inspected position’s band.
Five custom columns, search and sortable headers
- Add up to five Custom information fields: for example owner, mitigation status, review date, business unit and a risk-register URL. Each field becomes its own column.
- Search the cell’s risks: search matches risk names and custom-information values.
- Sort any visible column: click a header to switch between ascending and descending. Numeric and date fields sort by their underlying values; blanks remain last.
- Browse the complete matching list: sorting happens before pagination, with 100 risks per page.
- Open web links: valid HTTP/HTTPS values become clickable when Clickable URLs is enabled and the host supports them. Opening a link does not select the risk.
- Choose the presentation: independently show or hide Risk, Impact, Likelihood, Size and Risk Band, and set table text size from 8 to 24.
How to enable it
Use Risk Matrix/Heatmap Classic, bind a Category field and keep Risk Bubbles > Configuration > Show cell details on selection enabled. Configure columns and links under Risk Bubbles > Cell details. The table works with Custom, Power BI or Off tooltips; Custom information fields remain table-only unless also bound to Tooltips.
Select a risk to use Power BI report interactions, with Ctrl/Cmd for multiple selection. Close the panel with × or Escape without clearing the report selection. In All positions mode, cell totals count risk/phase positions, whereas table rows count distinct risks—so those counts can legitimately differ.
The same update adds compact, responsive custom tooltips and Full / Auto / Light animation effects. Auto reduces decorative effects for dense trajectories while retaining the risk values and final positions.

A full custom Risk Matrix Builder
The Matrix Builder is the largest change. It brings the important structural settings into one focused dialog: matrix sizing, cell labels, gridlines, color mode, band mode, number of bands, band names and score ranges. A live preview shows the result before you apply it.
This matters because risk methods are rarely identical. One organization uses three bands, another uses four. One needs diagonal bands, another needs a staircase, and a third has a custom policy approved by audit. Those differences are not cosmetic. They are part of the risk methodology.
6×5 and other flexible matrix layouts
A useful matrix should fit the scoring model. The update supports flexible dimensions, including non-square layouts such as 6×5. This is practical when Impact has six defined levels but Likelihood has five, or when the business needs to preserve an established scoring scale.
Bands and shapes that follow the policy
Low, Medium and High are not universal mathematical truths. They are business rules. The new band settings let you control the band names, colors and ranges so the visual follows the approved policy. Continuous color canvases are also available when a hard cell boundary would oversimplify the story.
Shapes make the risk states easier to distinguish. Start, Current and Treated can use different markers instead of relying only on color. That is clearer in presentations, more accessible, and much easier to read when the report is exported or printed.
Modern tooltip with useful context
The redesigned tooltip turns a bubble into a compact risk summary. It can identify the risk, show the active band, compare Impact and Likelihood across states, and include supporting fields from the model. The matrix stays clean, but the detail is one hover away.
Dynamic risk trajectory animation
A static risk position answers one question: where is the risk now? A trajectory answers the more useful question: what happened to it?
The new animation can move through Start, Current and Treated positions. The path shows whether controls reduce Likelihood, Impact or both. This is particularly useful in steering meetings because the audience sees the mitigation story instead of comparing three disconnected numbers.
Legends that explain the visual
The update adds clearer legends for the parts that need explanation: risk states, marker shapes, bands and bubble size. This sounds small, but it decides whether a report is self-explanatory or needs its builder standing next to it.
- Path legend: explains Start, Current and Treated positions.
- Size legend: shows what bubble size represents and gives scale examples.
- Risk marker legend: explains labels, counts, shares and additional risks in crowded cells.
- Band summary: counts risks in Low, Medium and High bands.
A new bubble design for crowded cells
Risk matrices get difficult when several items land in the same cell. The new bubble design improves grouping, labels and cell summaries. Bubble size can carry an additional measure, while the visual still communicates how many risks are in the cell and what share they represent.

- Can someone read the tooltip and legends without additional explanation?
- Does the animation clarify the mitigation story, or is it just moving furniture?
The last point is worth checking. Animation is useful when it explains change. If it does not improve the decision, switch it off.

The updated ReadyViz Ultimate Risk Matrix is no longer just a fixed risk heatmap. The custom builder, flexible 6×5 layouts, configurable bands and shapes, modern tooltip, animated trajectories, clearer legends and new bubble design make it a much more complete risk-reporting visual for Power BI.
The important part is still the model. A visual cannot repair inconsistent scoring or unclear ownership. But when the risk process is defined, this update gives Power BI enough flexibility to show it properly.
