9 Ways to do a Variance Analysis in Power BI

Following The semantic Rulebook of IBCS®, a variance analysis can also be performed with both the Ultimate Waterfall Chart Custom Visual and the Ultimate Variance Chart Custom Visual In Microsoft Power BI.

1 Ultimate Waterfall Chart with Subtotal and Deviation Analysis Table

A 3-Level but very simple profit and loss statement is displayed here. Next to the account, the current ACTUAL value is displayed in the first column. In the chart header (Actual), the column names are highlighted with bars around the current year or similar. In the next column the plan value for the current year is shown, highlighted with a white bar to color the aspect of the future. In addition to the absolute deviation, the percentage deviation is also shown in the table. Each individual column can be shown or hidden. The waterfall Chart which is integrated in the table can optionally display only the actual values or the plan values as a reference. Both the text of the label on the bars and the numbers in the table can optionally be visually highlighted with the associated sentiment color, depending on whether they are in the positive or negative orientation. The column width of the table automatically adapts to the length of the column name.

You can navigate through the multi-level accounts hierarchy either via the two large icons (+/-) in the upper left corner of the Chart, or directly on an account group. By repeatedly pressing the hierarchy symbol (left old Chart header, or right new Chart head up in the Chart to find), the navigation is first turned on. The sum of all operations of the button generally defines the number of levels that can be navigated with the symbols (+/-).

2 Ultimate Waterfall Chart for time series analysis

For time series, it is best to use a horizontal orientation of the X-axis. The following Chart shows each access and exit of a key figure and visualizes the total at the end with the total column. The Chart offers a lot of settings, such as additionally displaying a line of the result of the entries and exits. Furthermore, the colors can be changed or it can be defined which labels are displayed at which position.

The first Chart itself is here but a combined column which can basically show 3 values. IS value, target value and deviation. This first Chart is called base Chart, it can be combined with other Charts  from the series. In this case, the percentage deviation from budget and plan to the actual values is shown with a lollipop Chart. Alternatively one or two Charts can be displayed, even for absolute values. Further combinations with deviation Charts for absolute and percentage values are possible.

4 Ultimate Variance charts and tables accumulated (beginning of year to current period)

Similar to the previous section, but without total because it is a cumulative view of the data. It’s a pity that you should use a horizontal axis for time series, but demo data does not allow any other screenshots

5 Ultimate Variance Chart – Column in column with accumulated total column

The time series ends with an equally scaled total column. If the Chart is not already overloaded, there is still the option to further compress the information. By graphing another key figure like the previous year next to actual and target values. Alternatively, it is also possible to display a contribution margin in% instead of the previous year, for example. This key figure is displayed on a second Y axis, ie scaled differently.
